At the 1947 Michigan Federation of Business & Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. Convention, a resolution was adopted to establish and maintain a fund for cancer research.
The fund was established, and in 1949, the use of funds was expanded to provide financial assistance to BPW members for cancer related expenses. A revolving fund was set up to fund the program with donations from members.
In 1964, the Board of Overseers was established as a distinctly separate organization so that contributions qualify as tax deductible donations.
In 1980, on the recommendation of the BPW Michigan Board of Directors, use of the funds were expanded to include assistance for expenses related to other diseases and illness.
The fund may also be used to fund Fellowships, Scholarships to doctors and nurses specializing in cancer care, and has provided Grants to oncology/cancer related healthcare programs.
